To commemorate World Alzheimer's Day, we turn the spotlight towards a remarkable individual - Yeong Hon Mun, a staff of Filos Community Services' Eldersitter programme. With a career spanning over 30 years in eldercare, Hon Mun has become a beacon of compassion, providing support to those affected by dementia.
At 61 years young, Hon Mun's dedication shines brightly as he shares his journey and the profound impact he has made. "I've been serving as an Eldersitter at Filos for the past 11 years. Growing up, I was always drawn to the stories of the elderly. It felt like a calling to be their source of comfort and joy," he explains.
His role as an Eldersitter involves personalised sessions with befriending and therapeutic activities to maintain cognitive functions in persons with dementia. "I visit my clients at home to conduct various activities, from games to exercises. Music helps them too,” he shares with a smile. "I had a client who barely spoke or ate due to depression and early-onset dementia. Through patience and music, I helped her find her voice and positivity."
Despite the challenges, Hon Mun practises person-centred care and approaches each situation with grace. "Seniors might get physical or say inappropriate things. Understanding their condition and practicing patience is essential. It's about them, not me," he emphasises.
The theme for this year's World Alzheimer's Day, 'Never too early, never too late', stresses the importance of prevention, which Hon Mun resonates deeply. "Active engagement and socialisation are important in maintaining cognitive health," he advises. "We must encourage our elderly to stay connected and participate in community activities."
For families and caregivers dealing with dementia, Hon Mun advocates seeking support. "Courses and support groups can be invaluable. Understanding person-centred care is also crucial."
As Hon Mun continues to leave his mark on the lives he touches, he humbly shares, "Being an Eldersitter is not just about the clients; it's about uplifting families and caregivers too."
