A Grandmother’s Love That Knows No Bounds Back to list

In honour of Grandparents’ Day on 24 November, we want to celebrate the special role that grandparents play in our community by sharing the heartening story of Madam Suraya. At 65, Madam Suraya is a vibrant and spirited matriarch who spends her days caring for her 11-year-old granddaughter, Farhana, and her family. Farhana attends Tuition, Reading Room (Special), and Green Spot sessions at Filos.

Life has not always been easy for Madam Suraya, who began raising Farhana at a young age due to family circumstances. Having cared for her late husband who had cancer and raised her grandchildren, she embodies strength and resilience. “I’ve been looking after my grandchildren since they were young. It’s been busy, but I don’t mind because they are my family, and I get to spend time with them,” she shares.

Her bond with Farhana is special. The two are inseparable, playing memory games on their phones, shopping, and cooking together. Farhana, though cheeky, takes care of her grandmother, especially when she is unwell. “We’re like friends,” Madam Suraya says with a laugh. “When Farhana has problems, like with her schoolwork, she comes to me, and I push her to study hard. I’ve seen her improve, especially in English and Maths!”

Despite the challenges of caregiving, Madam Suraya finds ways to unwind. When Farhana is in school, Madam Suraya enjoys watching Tamil movies, and her family often takes her to the beach, where she loves playing with the sand. “I love going to the beach and the cinema,” she says. “It makes me so happy.” She is proud of the close bond she shares with her family.

Filos has been a source of support, providing bursaries, rations, and bonding opportunities through outings and activities for the family. Reflecting on her journey, Madam Suraya shares her wisdom: “Being a grandparent isn’t easy, but family is everything. Be understanding and always help where you can.”
